OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex usage allowance on its Pro 100 and Pro 500 ChatGPT plans on 29 October 2026, and the prices stayed the same. Pro 100 is $100 a month and Pro 500 is $500 a month, in US dollars. OpenAI also cancelled a planned reduction for the $200 Pro 200 plan and raised accounts that had the lower Pro 200 allowance to the higher level. OpenAI does not publish exact usage numbers, so the size of the increase is not stated in its own terms. Business Premium is reported to have received more usage too, but the official text does not state a multiplier for it.

In short

  • On 29 October 2026, OpenAI doubled Work and Codex usage on Pro 100 and Pro 500, with prices unchanged.
  • The planned Pro 200 cut, from 20 times to 10 times the Plus allowance, has been cancelled.
  • Business Premium is reported to have received more usage, but no multiplier is stated in the official text.
  • OpenAI does not publish exact usage numbers, so a business should measure its own usage before relying on the change.
  • The weekly GPT-6 Pro chat limit is not part of the doubling.

What happened

According to the Android Authority report, Thibault Sottiaux, a software engineer and product executive at OpenAI, announced the change on X on 29 October 2026. Android Authority reports that the post said usage limits would double on all Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 tiers, and on Business Premium. In a separate post, he said Pro 200 limits would not be reduced, so Work and Codex usage on that plan would stay the same. Bleeping Computer also reported the announcement and the statement that the Pro 200 cut would not go ahead.

The change is narrower than the headline phrase "all usage limits" suggests. OpenAI's help article "About ChatGPT Pro tiers" says that Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include more Work and Codex usage, and that all Pro 200 subscriptions now carry the same Work and Codex allowance. Work and Codex share one usage pool, so an increase applies to that combined allowance. The weekly GPT-6 Pro message limit in regular chat is not part of the change. According to Startup Fortune, the planned cut would have started on 30 October and would have moved Pro 200 Work and Codex usage from 20 times the Plus allowance to 10 times. That cut had been announced on 29 September 2026.

Why it matters for businesses that automate work

Many firms now run routine work through AI agents in ChatGPT Work or Codex. That work includes drafting reports, sorting documents and writing scripts that move data between files. The usage allowance sets how much of that work one person can run before hitting a limit. A higher allowance on the same price means fewer interruptions for a person doing heavy automated work, and fewer surprises in a monthly budget.

The reversal also matters for planning. OpenAI had announced a cut in September, then reversed it a day before it was due. For a business that built a routine around the Pro 200 plan, the plan it pays for is now the plan it keeps. That does not remove the risk that OpenAI changes limits again, which the company has done twice in a short period.

What changes for a business that automates work, in practice

A five-person office in Manchester and a logistics team in Chicago face the same first question: which account is actually doing the work? Individual Pro plans are bought by one person. Business seats are managed by a workspace owner. OpenAI's Business documentation describes Standard and Premium seats, and says Premium seats include 5x more usage than Standard seats and no five-hour usage limit. OpenAI published those figures on 10 August 2026. They are not the same as the 29 October change, and the official Business text reviewed here does not put a new multiplier on the Business Premium increase.

In practice, a business should check its own usage before assuming the new allowance fits. ChatGPT users can open Settings and then Usage to see their allowance. Owners who run Codex or Work across several staff should record which seat type each person holds, and what work each one runs each week. The change does not make a task finish faster or cheaper by itself. OpenAI says usage depends on the model, the amount of context loaded, reasoning effort and tools used, so a doubled allowance does not mean double the output. Results depend on each business's own workload, which is why a before-and-after count from the user's own account is more useful than any headline figure.

Automation is not the right answer for every task. Work that needs a legal sign-off, a tax filing check or a payroll decision still needs a named person who checks the output. Adding usage on the cheapest plan does not remove that review step.

What to watch next

Three things are worth watching. The first is whether OpenAI publishes exact allowances per tier. At present it does not, so the size of the doubling can only be judged from a user's own usage meter. The second is the Business Premium position. Public reports say the increase applies, but the official text reviewed here does not state how much. A business buying Premium seats should ask for the figure in writing or check OpenAI's current Business pages before committing. The third is whether the weekly GPT-6 Pro chat limit changes. OpenAI has kept it the same for Pro 100 and Pro 500, and that could change in a later release.

Price is also worth watching. The Pro prices in this change are the same as before, but a business that needs more than one seat should compare the Pro plans with Business Standard and Premium seats on OpenAI's pricing page.

How AiStaffo would automate this

For a team that runs routine reporting or document work through ChatGPT Work or Codex, the first step is to see where each person's usage actually goes. AiStaffo would connect the sources that feed that work, such as accounting exports, document folders and report templates, and set up the routine runs to happen on a schedule. A person still reviews each output, decides which runs go ahead, and keeps track of usage by seat and by task. Book a free automation audit.

Questions people ask

Did OpenAI double all ChatGPT Pro limits?
No. According to OpenAI's help article about Pro tiers, the increase covers the Work and Codex allowance on Pro 100 and Pro 500. The weekly GPT-6 Pro message limit in regular chat is unchanged. Pro 200 accounts with the lower allowance were raised to the higher one.
Did the Pro 200 price change?
No. The $200 monthly price stayed the same. OpenAI cancelled the cut it had planned to start on 30 October 2026, which would have reduced Work and Codex usage on Pro 200.
Does the change apply to Business Premium seats?
Bleeping Computer reported that OpenAI said Business Premium would get higher usage. The official text reviewed here does not give a multiplier for that tier. Check OpenAI's current Business pages or ask the vendor for the figure before buying seats for this reason.
How much more work can a Pro plan now do?
OpenAI does not publish exact numerical limits for each tier, so the size of the increase cannot be checked against a published figure. OpenAI also says that doubled usage does not mean doubled output, because the amount used depends on the model, context, reasoning and tools. A business should measure its own usage in its account.
Do I need to do anything to get the higher limits?
According to a summary of the change, no action is required for eligible accounts, since OpenAI applied the higher limits right away. Owners should still check the usage page in their account. Staff who have a Pro plan can open Settings and then Usage to see their allowance.
