An expatriate employee in Kuwait costs the salary plus end-of-service indemnity building up at 15 days' pay a year for the first five years and a month's pay a year after, residence and health fees, and hiring costs. Kuwaiti staff carry an 11.5% employer PIFSS contribution instead. A KWD 600-a-month expatriate clerk costs about KWD 8,680 a year.

An expatriate clerk on KWD 600 a month in their third year: salary KWD 7,200, indemnity build-up KWD 346, health insurance KWD 150, residence and visa KWD 100, laptop and software about KWD 400, hiring spread over 3 years KWD 480. Total about KWD 8,680 a year, 1.21 times the salary. A Kuwaiti on the same pay costs about KWD 9,058 with PIFSS of KWD 828.
What counts in the true cost of an employee
Salary is only the start. The calculator adds what the law makes the employer pay (social security, pension, unemployment insurance, end-of-service build-up), what the job needs (health insurance, visas, a laptop and software), and what staff turnover costs (advertising, interviews, training and lost output each time someone leaves, spread over the years an employee usually stays). Dividing by the days actually worked gives the cost of one productive hour.
