GST Invoice Generator (India, 2026)

A GST tax invoice in India must show the supplier's name, address and GSTIN, a serial number of up to 16 characters, the date, the buyer's details and GSTIN if registered, HSN or SAC codes, taxable value, the rate and amount of CGST + SGST (same state) or IGST (different state), the place of supply, and whether reverse charge applies (CGST Rule 46). This generator works out the tax split for you.

For businesses and freelancers billing their own real sales. An invoice or receipt for a supply or payment that did not happen is a false document. Figures are entered by you and are not checked by AiStaffo.

CGST + SGST or IGST?

Compare the supplier's state with the place of supply. Same state: half the rate as CGST and half as SGST (UTGST in Chandigarh, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu). Different states: the full rate as IGST. Choose both states in the form and the generator applies the right split on every line.

The first two digits of a GSTIN are the state code, so the tool also fills the state from a GSTIN and checks its check digit.

Worked example

A Pune (Maharashtra) agency bills web design ₹40,000 (SAC 998314) with a 10% discount, plus one year of hosting ₹6,000 (SAC 998315), both at 18% GST. Taxable value: ₹36,000 + ₹6,000 = ₹42,000.

Client in Mumbai (same state): CGST 9% ₹3,780 + SGST 9% ₹3,780. Client in Bengaluru (Karnataka): IGST 18% ₹7,560. Either way the invoice total is ₹49,560, "Forty-Nine Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Rupees Only".

Time limits and other documents

For services, the tax invoice must be issued within 30 days of supply (Rule 47); for goods, before or at the time of removal or delivery. A business under the composition scheme, or one supplying only exempt goods or services, issues a bill of supply instead, without GST. A proforma invoice is only a quotation and is not a tax invoice.

For businesses: let the invoicing run itself

GST invoicing is followed by GSTR-1 filing, reconciliation with GSTR-2B and payment follow-ups every month. Raising invoices, matching payments and chasing overdue clients is routine work an AI worker can run end to end, with your team only checking exceptions. Book a free automation audit and we will show you what it would take off your desk.

Please note: this generator follows CGST Rule 46 and the GST rates as checked on 21 October 2026. It does not produce an IRP e-invoice (IRN and QR code) or an e-way bill. Confirm the HSN/SAC and rate for each item with your tax adviser.

Questions people ask

What is the format of a GST tax invoice?
Supplier name, address and GSTIN; invoice number and date; buyer details and GSTIN; HSN/SAC, description, quantity and unit; taxable value; CGST + SGST or IGST rate and amount; place of supply; reverse charge yes or no; and a signature.
When do I charge CGST and SGST instead of IGST?
When the supplier's state and the place of supply are the same state, charge CGST and SGST at half the rate each. When they are different states, charge IGST at the full rate.
How many digits of HSN do I need on an invoice?
Four digits if your aggregate turnover in the previous year was up to ₹5 crore, and six digits above that.
Is amount in words mandatory on a GST invoice?
Rule 46 does not list it, but almost every business shows it and many buyers expect it. The generator adds it in Indian numbering (lakh, crore).
How long can a GST invoice number be?
Up to 16 characters, using letters, numbers, hyphens and slashes, unique within the financial year. A common format is INV/2026-27/001.
Can I use this for e-invoicing?
No. Businesses above ₹5 crore turnover must report B2B invoices on the government IRP to get an IRN and QR code. Use this tool if you are below that limit, or for B2C and proforma invoices.
