Pay Stub Generator (US)

A US pay stub shows gross pay (hours times rate for hourly staff), each deduction (federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, state and local tax, 401(k), benefits), net pay, the pay period and year-to-date totals. No federal law requires pay stubs, but most states do, in print or electronically.

For employers and payroll staff issuing payslips to their own employees from real payroll records. Do not use it to create a payslip for yourself or to show anyone figures that were not actually paid: that is a false document.

No general requirementAlabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Dakota and Tennessee (check local rules)
Common contentsEmployer name and address, employee name, pay period dates, hours and rates for hourly staff, gross pay, each deduction, net pay; some states (e.g. California) also require the last 4 digits of the SSN and paid sick leave balance

Medicare1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% additional on wages above $200,000

Worked example

Press "Fill example figures" to load this example (a two-week pay period). Earnings: Regular pay $2,000.00, Overtime pay $150.00, so gross pay is $2,150.00. Deductions: Federal income tax $180.00, Social Security $133.30, Medicare $31.18, State income tax $70.00, 401(k) $86.00, $500.48 in all. Net pay is $2,150.00 − $500.48 = $1,649.52, written on the payslip as "One Thousand Six Hundred Forty-Nine US Dollars and Fifty-Two Cents Only". The deduction amounts are examples; work out real ones with your payroll software or the salary calculator for your country.

For employers

Payslips are the last step of a monthly routine: collecting attendance, working out pay and deductions, filing returns, sending slips and answering questions. AI workers now run that routine end to end with a person approving the exceptions. Book a free automation audit and we will show what it would take off your payroll desk.

Please note: the generator formats the figures you enter; it does not check them against tax or labour law. Rules are as checked on 21 October 2026 from the sources below. This is not legal or tax advice.

Questions people ask

Are employers required to give pay stubs?
Not under federal law, but most states require a pay statement on paper or electronically. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Dakota and Tennessee have no general requirement. Even there, employers must keep payroll records under the FLSA.
What should a pay stub include?
Pay period, pay date, hours and rate for hourly staff, gross pay, each deduction (federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, 401(k), health insurance), net pay and year-to-date totals.
How much is Social Security and Medicare in 2026?
Employees pay 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $184,500 and 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare above $200,000. Employers pay a matching 6.2% and 1.45%.
What does YTD mean on a pay stub?
Year to date: the running total for the calendar year of each earning and deduction, including the current pay period. The generator adds the YTD totals and YTD net pay.
Can I show only the last four digits of the SSN?
Yes, and you should. California, for example, allows only the last four digits or an employee ID on a pay stub.
Can I use this to make a payslip for myself?
No. The generator is for employers and payroll staff issuing payslips to their own employees from real payroll figures. A payslip that misstates pay, or is made to show a bank, landlord or visa office something untrue, is a false document and can be a criminal offence.
