Worked example
Single person earning €45,000 a year, no pension.
Income tax: 20% × €44,000 = €8,800 plus 40% × €1,000 = €400, total €9,200, minus €4,000 credits = €5,200.
USC: 0.5% × €12,012 = €60.06, 2% × €16,688 = €333.76, 3% × €16,300 = €489, total €882.82.
PRSI: 4.35% × €45,000 = €1,957.50.
Take-home pay = €45,000 − €5,200 − €882.82 − €1,957.50 = €36,959.68 a year, about €3,079.97 a month.
PRSI went up on 1 October 2026
Employee PRSI rose from 4.2% to 4.35% on 1 October 2026, as part of the planned yearly increases to fund the State pension. The calculator uses 4.35% by default so the result matches your payslips now. Pick the whole-year option to see the 2026 total. Budget 2027 has announced a further rise to 4.5% from 1 October 2027.
Budget 2027 changes are not in this year
Budget 2027 (October 2026) announced wider tax bands, higher credits and a wider 2% USC band from 1 January 2027. They do not change 2026 pay, so this calculator uses the 2026 figures.
For employers
Running payroll by hand (tax tables, contributions, payslips, filings) is routine work that AI workers now handle with almost no staff time. See what an employee really costs you, or book a free automation audit for your payroll.
Please note: figures follow the published 2026 rates as checked on 21 October 2026 for a resident employee in the standard case. It covers one PAYE salary. It does not cover married couples with two incomes, the reduced USC rate for medical card holders or people over 70, rent and other tax credits, benefits in kind, or emergency tax. This is a guide, not tax advice; your payslip can differ because of tax codes, benefits and timing.
