Worked example

Sam earns $85,000 a year, claims the tax-free threshold and has a HELP debt. Income tax is $4,020 on the first $45,000 plus 30% of $40,000 = $16,020 (no low income tax offset at this income). Medicare levy is 2% = $1,700. HELP repayment is 15% of the $15,472 above $69,528 = $2,320.80.

Take-home pay: $64,959.20 a year, about $5,413.27 a month. Sam's employer also pays $10,200 super (12%) into Sam's fund.

What changed on 1 July 2026

The second tax rate fell from 16% to 15% for income between $18,201 and $45,000. Everyone earning over $45,000 saves $268 a year compared with 2025-26. The rate falls again to 14% from 1 July 2027. HELP repayment thresholds were raised: nothing is repaid until repayment income passes $69,528, and only the part above that is charged at 15c in the dollar.

Tax-free threshold and second jobs

You can claim the tax-free threshold from one employer only, normally your main job. Untick the box to see what a second employer withholds: tax is taken from the first dollar at the ATO Scale 1 rates. Your final tax is worked out on your total income when you lodge your tax return.

For employers

Running payroll by hand (tax tables, contributions, payslips, filings) is routine work that AI workers now handle with almost no staff time. See what an employee really costs you, or book a free automation audit for your payroll.

Please note: figures follow the published 2026-27 rates as checked on 21 October 2026 for a resident employee in the standard case. It shows your yearly tax bill as worked out in a tax return (with the tax-free threshold) or Scale 1 withholding (without it). Medicare levy low-income thresholds are the latest published ($28,011 single); the 2026-27 figures are set in the 2027 Budget. Not included: Medicare levy surcharge, family and senior thresholds, salary sacrifice, reportable fringe benefits, other offsets and non-resident or working holiday maker rates. This is a guide, not tax advice; your payslip can differ because of tax codes, benefits and timing.

Questions people ask

How much tax do I pay on $100,000 in Australia in 2026-27?
An Australian resident earning $100,000 pays $20,520 income tax and $2,000 Medicare levy in 2026-27, so take-home pay is $77,480 a year, about $6,457 a month, before any HELP repayment. Your employer adds $12,000 super on top.
What are the 2026-27 tax brackets in Australia?
Nil to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy of 2% is added on top for most people.
Is super taken out of my salary?
No. The 12% super guarantee is paid by your employer on top of your salary into your super fund. Some job offers quote a package that includes super; in that case your salary is the package divided by 1.12.
When do I have to repay my HELP debt?
For 2026-27 compulsory repayments start when your repayment income is over $69,528. You repay 15c for each dollar above that, rising to 17c above $129,717 and 10% of your whole income from $186,051.
Should I claim the tax-free threshold?
Claim it from your main job only. If you claim it from two employers, too little tax is withheld and you will owe tax when you lodge your return.
Does this include the Medicare levy surcharge?
No. The 1% to 1.5% surcharge applies only to higher earners without private hospital cover. It is not withheld from pay by default and is charged in your tax return.
