Worked example
Salary ¥5,000,000 a year (¥416,667 a month, no bonus), single, under 40, Tokyo.
Standard monthly remuneration ¥410,000. Health 4.925% = ¥20,192 a month, child support levy ¥471, pension 9.15% = ¥37,515, employment insurance ¥2,083. Year: ¥723,132.
Income tax 2026: employment income ¥5,000,000 − ¥1,440,000 = ¥3,560,000; minus social insurance and the ¥1,040,000 basic deduction = ¥1,796,000 taxable. 5% = ¥89,800, plus 2.1% surtax = ¥91,600.
Resident tax estimate: (¥3,560,000 − ¥723,132 − ¥430,000) rounded to ¥2,406,000 × 10% − ¥2,500 + ¥5,000 = ¥243,000.
Take-home pay = ¥3,942,268 a year, about ¥328,522 a month.
The 2026 tax reform
For 2026 income the basic deduction rises to ¥620,000 plus a temporary top-up (¥420,000 for income up to ¥4.89m, ¥50,000 up to ¥6.55m), and the minimum employment income deduction rises to ¥740,000. Monthly withholding does not change until November 2026; the difference comes back in the December year-end adjustment (nenmatsu chosei). The calculator shows the final 2026 income tax.
Why resident tax is an estimate
Resident tax (juminzei) is charged on the previous calendar year's income and deducted from June to May. In your first year in Japan you usually pay none. The estimate uses this year's salary with the rules for tax year 2026 (2025 income) and the Tokyo 23-ward per-capita levy.
For employers
Running payroll by hand (tax tables, contributions, payslips, filings) is routine work that AI workers now handle with almost no staff time. See what an employee really costs you, or book a free automation audit for your payroll.
Please note: figures follow the published 2026 rates as checked on 21 October 2026 for a resident employee in the standard case. It assumes a single person with no dependants, 12 equal monthly salaries and no bonus, Kyokai Kenpo health insurance and no other income. It does not cover spouse or dependant deductions, life insurance and iDeCo deductions, furusato nozei, company health insurance societies with other rates, or exact resident tax for your city. This is a guide, not tax advice; your payslip can differ because of tax codes, benefits and timing.
